What is SEO?

Have you ever wondered what determines who is at the top of a Google or Bing search?

If you own a business, small or large, do you ever think about how you are going to make it as high up as some of those results?

The answer: search engine optimization, or SEO for short.

Several factors help determine how optimized your website is for search engines.

All the major search engines (like Google, Bing, or Yahoo) use algorithms determine which ones are the most authoritative and relevant. If they pick up applicable keywords, or links from other websites, they can determine how high up your website appears on the search engine.

SEO not only helps to increase the quality of your website’s traffic, but can help raise the sheer number of people who visit.

What is High Quality Website Traffic?

Imagine you have a clothing brand called “Gelatin,” and you are trying to get more exposure for it.

Now imagine people are searching on Google or Bing for “gelatin,” but they are looking for a gelatin-based dessert recipe.

They might see your website, but leave once they see it is not what they are looking for. That is not the kind of traffic you want.

Strong SEO can help get your business into the correct search category. Keyword & Key phrase matching, content matching, inbound links from related, industry specific sources are all key to cleaning up this SERP mismatch.

SEO: Keywords

Keywords are the words on your web page which help the search engine show your results to the correct visitor base.

This is the top way to help get the traffic you are looking for. The best place to put keywords is in the H1 (or headline/title), but putting them in the main text bodies, H2’s, H3’s is key as well.

But when we say place these keywords, we mean use synonyms, alternate the way you say something. Use trends, Google Suggest, Analytics, and Adwords in order to find addition voicings.

In the example above, if the Gelatin brand had pages with an H1 like “Gelatin: Urban Professional Clothing,” you would be more likely to show up when people looked for urban professional clothing than when they were looking for dessert recipes.

In the bodies of text, including the phrases “clothing brand,” “professional clothing,” et cetera, would help too.

In short, Keywords help Google and Bing to rank pages.

Quantity: How to Get Traffic to Your Website

Once you the search engine algorithms index you correctly, you have a much better shot at people noticing you. Statistically speaking, however, most users (a little over 90%) will only view, at most, the first three pages of search results.

Now that you are in the right listing, how do you get your preferred clientele to view your page? One way is if other places add links to your webpage on their website.

That can help the search engine algorithms decide how high up you appear in the search results. Additionally, the keywords can help you, which makes sense, as keywords are effectively just words that you know people are searching for.

Organic SEO Traffic

This is one of the other keys to success when working on your SEO. Organic traffic is a result of organic search results in a search engine.

These are the search results that are listed because they pertain to what the user searched. While you could pay for non-organic search results, that is not necessarily the best approach.

For example, someone with an ad blocker will not see those results. Moreover, users tend to be wary of those results, as sometimes they can lead to getting a virus. As such, organic search results will be best for your business.
